Discussion Questions:
- Is it odd that Rory is excited about Lorelai marrying Max?
- When Lorelai breaks her ‘good’ news to Luke, do you think she expects him to be upset? And is off-put that he is not?
- Why is Luke not upset about the news? Or is he, and just expressing it differently?
- Is Luke trying to sabotage Lorelai’s relationship by pointing out all the issues?
- Do you think Jackson wants to marry Sookie? Is nervous because he knows so little about weddings? Or is it too early?
- Why doesn’t Lorelai tell her parents about the engagement?
- Why are Emily and Richard so rude to Dean? Especially Richard?
- Why won’t Richard talk to Rory?
- Why isn’t Dean mad?
- Is Lane right to be suspicious about the large suitcase?
Gilmore Girls Episode Recap & Photos:
Stars Hollow and its inhabitants are decorated with the 1000 daisies. Rory is talking about how Lorelai’s wedding should be. Lorelai has not yet said yes or no, so she’s not ready to talk about those things.
Mr & Mrs. Kim are sending Lane to Korea – with a one-way ticket. Lane is worried she won’t be coming back – her parents won’t tell her.
Lorelai looks at wedding magazines. Miss Patty cautions Lorelai to be gentle when breaking the news to Luke. Lorelai is the only one oblivious to the fact that she an Luke are more than friends. Lorelai is on her way to Luke’s for coffee – Miss Patty ushers the town behind to watch the Luke/Lorelai scene unfold.
Lorelai broaches the subject carefully, but Luke says he’s happy for her. That he figured it out the night before – and it’s a weird moment of this ‘big deal’ topic being very casual. Luke even asks where Lorelai would live – Stars Hollow or Hartford – and suggests the logic of Hartford. And asks if Lorelai will work or have kids – he’s digging. He finds that Lorelai and Max have not talked about these things. Lorelai goes back to her table a little less happy than when she came in.
Lorelai is completely distracted – got lost 6 times driving to Hartford. Emily is bursting with excitement because Rory has finished in the top 3% of students at Chilton! While the rest talk about throwing Rory a special dinner, Lorelai fiddles with her butterfly ring and puts it on her ring finger to see how it looks. She excuses herself to call Max and shoot him with questions about their future. She wants open communication with Max about their relationship. Lorelai slips up and says they need to discuss these things "before we…." and Max gets excited, asking if Lorelai is going to say yes.
Lorelai walks part way into the dining room and looks ready to squeal. Rory notices. Lorelai nods – she said yes! Rory screams and runs to her. They jump up and down. But tell Emily it’s about the 3% thing.
Lorelai tells Sookie who, after making sure it was Max, is so thrilled. She starts to cry – saying how Lorelai really deserves it. Jackson walks in and asks if Sookie is ok, and she says ‘Married’ several times. Jackson seems a little un-enthused. When asked what a romantic vegetable is, he has a monologue about why he is not qualified to say. Only ever been to one wedding.
Lorelai (wearing glasses, btw) is prepping dinner – Max calls to speak with Rory about which ring Lorelai might like (he narrowed it to 3 choices). Rory does not disguise to Lorelai what they are talking about. She repeats what he says about the rings so she can get a nod from Lorelai. Lorelai starts begging like a dog when he mentions the ring from the 20s Deco. Lorelai’s yap alerts Max she’s there.
Dean comes over for movie night. Rory invites him to the family dinner next Friday – he’s a little hesitant after the dance incident, but agrees.
When they arrive there on Friday, Emily looks a little annoyed, but Lorelai reminds her how ‘nice’ it was for Emily to invite a friend for ‘Rory’s special night’ – and Emily is more civil.
Oh, Lorelai. When Emily asks what they want to drink, she suggests beer for Dean. Dean freaks out about not drinking beer – but Emily got that it was a joke. Helps ease the tension. Dean goes to shake hands with Richard, but Richard snubs him. Everyone – Emily included – looks surprised by this.
At dinner, Dean sits under the watchful and judgmental eyes of Richard. Richard can’t even look Rory in the eye or talk to her when Rory thanks him for the gift. Out of the blue, Richard asks Dean where he plans on going to college. And grills him about his grades. Emily tries to butt in and tell Richard to back off. Lorelai tries to talk to prevent Richard from asking more. But Richard goes on about Rory being so smart, and what Dean will do for a living. Even Rory tries to tell him to shut up. Dean has no plans yet – Richard goes on about how he had plans since he was 10, and Rory has plans. To make a point. Rory tells him that Dean is special and that Richard was rude for attacking him when he comes as a guest.
"This family has standards. You live up to them. And you should expect that everyone you spend time with live up to them also. You are a gifted girl, with immense promise. And you should learn very early that certain people can hold you back."
Rory decides it’s time to go.
Lorelai feels bad and jokes.
"Well, Dean, all I can say is that tonight you officially became a Gilmore Girl."
Rory tries to apologize. When she goes in, she is raving mad. That Richard is a snob. That he doesn’t listen and expects you to agree with everything he says. Lorelai tries to calm her down. Saying how much Richard loves Rory. And that his flip out may have nothing to do with Dean or with Rory – that Rory is, to them, the daughter they dreamed of and will do great things with her life. And that seeing Dean brought on a Lorelai flashback - of a similar plan interrupted. Lane calls to tell Rory how big her suitcase is – she thinks that she’s not coming back.
Richard is raving mad at Lorelai for letting Rory be with Dean. Emily defends Rory – that the way she yelled at Richard was a reaction to Richard’s ill behavior.
Sookie calls Emily to have her mark off a date on her calendar – she’s planning a surprise wedding shower for Lorelai. Surprise alright – Emily doesn’t know. But doesn’t let on. She storms into Richard’s office to tell him to apologize to Rory – to say Dean is welcome there any time.
"Our daughter is getting married. And didn’t tell us. When Rory decides to get married, I’d like her to tell us."
Emily leaves and it looks like she’s crying.
Lorelai tells Max about the Gilmore fiasco. He gives her the ring – smiling, Lorelai says "I’m getting married…"

I dont think Luke is trying to Sabotage their relationship. I think that’s just his way of expressing his feelings. It’s like he was saying “you are going to get engaged to him and havn’t talked about anything important, and yet we’re just friends but we can talk about that stuff.”
Did anyone else Notice that Richard did to Dean in this episode what the Huntzburgers did to Rory in season 5. He basically said Dean wasnt good enough to be in Rory’s life… the same as Shira and Logan’s Grandfather said Rory wasnt good enough to be in Logan’s. Hypocracy?
I’m agree with Tucker about the Huntzburgers not nice to Rory for she not good enough for Logan in 5 season, but he get mad at them.Like Rory get mad and fight with Richard from Dean. Jackson really love Sookie,if he will ready want marry Sookie soon or later.Maybe Lorelai afraid tell her parents about engagement,if they dont like Max.But I felt bad Emily for surprise that Lorelai and Max get married without tell her.
i always like the first episode of a season! i think this one is particularly funny, we see how nosey stars hollow really is! priceless!!
wow! I didn’t notice about the Huntzbergers thing. Very well point out! haha! LOL
I think, Rory and Lorelai like the idea of marriage and are excited at the prospects, but when it comes right down do it. They like their life the way it is. Change in living arrangements and sharing their mother and daughter daily life, would derail them.
After Richard goes through his rejection of Dean, I like when, Lorelai says to Emily. “Isn’t that supposed to be us.” And, I am sad that Lorelai doesn’t tell her Mother about her engagement.
Because, Emily was reaching out to them, making their favorite foods, and in such a good mood because of Rory making it into the top 3%.
I agree with Tucker, that Luke doesn’t want to sabatoge anything just pointing out, they have lots to talk about. And, he knows her so much better than she knows herself. I always, love their verbal exchanges. It is like a ping pong match, or like Sookie said about her and Jackson’s verbal sparring. It is like a Jack Lalane workout.
Max went a little Lorelai on us when he was describing rings to Rory then tossing the “no” choice pix over his shoulders. Great! I so need this show to just laugh a moment or two a day!
“Mom’s watching her program again – it’s her alone time!” ….
Okay, Emily is on Rory and Lorelai’s side and Richard isn’t? Am I the only one who sees the logical fallacy, here?
