Gilmore Girls 7.16 "Will You Be My Lorelai Gilmore?" Recap

Episode Name: "Will You Be My Lorelai Gilmore?"
Episode Number: 7.16
Air Date: January 27, 2007

Stars Hollow Baby Store, exit Lorelai and Rory. They have bought 60 onesies to decorate during the baby shower. Rory says perhaps it’s too little – the first pancake toss out rule – but Lorelai says anything is cute on a onesie. Rory is working to make the shower great – not just good – to make up for the whole bachelorette disaster.

Rory gets a call from the NY Times, she is super excited. Rory has been writing online for the contact she got from Logan’s party, Hugo, and he got her a contact at the NY Times, whom she called. Now, this AJ just called back and Rory has an interview tomorrow in New York. Lorelai insists she take over planning the shower so Rory can go to the interview.

"Oh my gosh, the New York Times called me. And not the subscription department" – Rory

Lorelai is setting up the "Congratulations, It’s a Boys" banner – not quite what she asked for – at her house, putting balloons up and whatnot. Sookie is gossiping about Britney Spears driving with the baby on her lap. Sookie is pulling the lazy pregnant woman card.

Lorelai asks Sookie to look through a box for baby pictures of Lane for the shower. Lorelai decides to call Mrs. Kim but apparently Sookie sat against the phone and wants to keep it there – it’s helping a knot in her back. lol

Logan comes home at 3am and tosses his keys at a lamp, breaks it. He’s incredibly drunk. Rory wakes up and asks him if he’s ok and where he was. Rory steps in to make Logan a sandwich, despite being mad about not knowing where Logan was. Logan is being defensive about being allowed to go out with his friends. Mentions how life is hard. He then goes to bed.

Zack is dealing with a customer not liking his oatmeal because it’s not whole oats. Kirk is incredibly proud of the classified ad he’s placed in the paper – ah, just seeing his name in print. Zack asks Luke if he’s going to the baby shower, but Luke says its not his thing, but he has them a gift. Zack tries to pressure him to go.

Kirk, after asking if he needs to wear a baby costume to the baby shower, continues reading the classifieds. He then accidentally reads an ad for Luke’s boat – which he did not place. He picks up the phone.

Mrs. Kim is trying to sell to a customer when Lorelai walks in to get pictures of Lane. Mrs. Kim wants to ensure the pictures come back in pristine condition. Mrs. Kim says she won’t  be going to the baby shower – that it’s not something she can put aside, that Lane knows what it is, and nothing can convince her to change her mind. Little fued.

Lorelai pops in on a very pregnant Lane, who is ‘nesting’ by decorating her place. Lorelai brings up the feud with Mrs. Kim. Lane says they had a fight beginning with whether or not the children can eat fried shrimp, where Lane then brings up how her kids will have freedom to listen to their own music and won’t be forced to go to church. They will be free to do what they want.

Lorelai tries to pacify by saying that she doesn’t know what kinds of things her kids will be interested in. That what she considers "freedom" could be biased to just what she likes, too. What if they want to go to church. Lane is then reminded about Christmas, and Lane says they will probably go to church sometimes. Then Lorelai tells Lane the kids can’t eat solid for quite some time, so no shrimp for at least a year. And, technically, that’s enough for her to pacify Mrs. Kim with.

Rory is all dressed up for her interview with the New York Times, goes to wake up a very hung-over Logan. She tries to convince Logan to call his dad back, and meanwhile he won’t even answer the phone. Rory leaves as the Huntzberger office calls again to get Logan to call Mitchum. Logan is supposed to drive them later to the baby shower so that Rory can change on the way.

Liz and TJ want to get rid of the boat, which is in their garage, so that Liz can turn the garage into a workspace for her jewelry. And, at the same time, they anticipated that perhaps he would invest some of the profits in Liz’s business. How presumptuous.

Luke says he won’t sell the boat, end of discussion. Liz just wants him to get rid of the boat. That their dad worked on it for 20 years, that Luke worked on it for 20 years. And doesn’t want Luke to get stuck too. Liz tries to tell Luke that their dad was stuck doing things the same way because he was afraid of change – not because he loved it, as Luke thinks.

Rory calls to ask how bald is bald, because she can’t figure out which bald guy is the New York Times bald guy. She’s feeling very anxious. Another bald guy walks in. Not her bald guy. On the plus side, lots of bald guys are feeling quite flattered.

Lorelai guarantees Mrs. Kim Easter and Christmas and the possibility of bible study. She counters with a list of her own demands – more church, food demands, Church demands, and no sandboxes, for example. Mrs. Kim does not want to see her grandchildren raised as heathens. Lorelai reminds Mrs. Kim that she and Lane have differences, but she is not necessarily rejecting Mrs. Kim because of that. She also says how she and her mom missed so much as Rory was small, and doesn’t want to see that happen to Mrs. Kim.

Luke calls April, who is now in New Mexico. Luke brings up their summer visit, suggests a trip together. They will have six weeks together. Luke doesn’t know where they could go – perhaps Florida – Disneyworld. He seems more thrilled about the concept than April, who cannot imagine Luke on the beach or in the Disney mode. April says she’s not ‘expecting anything’ – kind of politely saying that she understands that Luke is set in his mundane ways. This brings home to him what Liz said earlier about him being in a rut.

Lorelai brings Mrs. Kim over to see Lane, trying to pacify things. Mrs. Kim insists that Lorelai talk for her to Lane. That out of mutual love and respect, Mrs. Kim will come to the shower. Lane has some discomfort. Mrs. Kim insists they go to the hospital and that Lorelai drive.

Lane in bed, complaining about being put on bed rest. Lane tries to blame Mrs. Kim for taking her to the hospital, but Lorelai says it’s ok. Like one long Sunday. Lane remembers she cannot have her party, that it’s her last party. Lane comments how Mrs. Kim did everything for Lane and that she will be the same way – a comment that makes her notice that she is more like her mom than she thought. Mrs. Kim then insists that Lane have her shower. Good bonding moment.

Rory comes home, but Logan is not dressed. She tries to rush him out the door, but he sits her down to talk. Logan confesses that the company is going belly up, that he lost everyone’s money. The lawsuit about the patent has merit, and all their money is gone. And it’s been weeks not days since he first knew about the lawsuit. He says it’s all his fault – he rushed in without doing his research. Rory is trying to help make him feel better, which doesn’t work. Not only does Logan feel stupid, but he is just waiting for Mitchum to find out – which he has not yet – and come tell him how stupid he is.

Logan does not want to go to the shower. Not really in the mood. Instead, he’s planning to go to Las Vegas with Colin and Finn. Rory is dumbfounded that he is going. Rory asks if it is really what he wants to do. He gets ready to go.

Luke tries to sell the boat to Kirk. Luke sets the price at $600, which is very reasonable. Kirk tries to negotiate, but in the end buys it. Luke sells his boat!

Lorelai is setting up the baby shower – now moved to Miss Patty’s. It looks so adorable! There are even painted signs like the stork that says "Lane & Zack’s Baby Shower". Aw! Rory comes in and wants to know why the baby shower was moved. Because Lane is on bed rest. And now we see the Gilmore’s, Zack and Mrs. Kim pushing Lane, in bed, through the streets of town and up to Miss Patty’s.

Baby shower in full blow. Lots of food, lots of people, and some very cute onesies being painted. Miss Patty asks how Lorelai is doing about the whole Chris thing, a statement which draws some attention from the crowd. Lorelai says she is fine.

Apparently, Gil’s onesie was the best. Lulu mentions how cool he is. Anyway, some people want do-overs for their onesies, but Lorelai says no. How cute, Rory was right.

Rory stands up to give a speech at the shower. Says how much she loves Lane and how happy she is for them. Lane thanks Rory for the great shower.

"How often does a girl’s best friend have twins" – Rory

"Just once, let’s hope" – Lane

Lane is so happy. She didn’t think it would all happen. Especially with the fight, which Rory didn’t know about. Lane is very thankful to Lorelai for her help.

Lane then asks if Rory would be there for her kids – as godmother – to be the person they can go to. She asks in a very cute way, though:

"Will you be my Lorelai Gilmore?" – Lane

Lorelai Gilmore, senior, was there for Lane when she needed to get away from Mrs. Kim, and Lane wants someone to be there for her kids when they need to get away from her. Plus, she already has the name for it. ;)

Mrs. Kim gives Lorelai John Adams’ doorknob. As her thanks for being there – more in terms of ‘for them’ not ‘at the shower.’

Jackson and Sookie are there, and apparently most of the gifts are from them. Sookie felt guilty because she had promised all of their old baby things to Lane, but now she was knocked up again. So, Jackson complains about how Lane gets all the new stuff and they get the old crap. But Sookie retorts "And whose fault is that", gesturing at her tummy.

Kirk comes in with his captain’s hat for his new SS Lurk (Luke + Kirk). Mentions how he bought Luke’s boat to Lorelai, which surprises her.

Rory pulls Lorelai outside. Rory fills Lorelai in that she is one of four finalists for an internship at the New York Times. She is very nervous. Lorelai asks when Logan will get there – Rory tells Lorelai about the disaster. That Logan is losing not just his money, but his dad’s money, which makes him feel bad. Also that he is now on a binger with his buds.

Rory wishes he had told her earlier, so she could help, be there for him. And mentions how disappointed he is not there to meet everyone at the shower. She sounds hurt on many levels.

There was a general ‘aww’ moment, which prompts Lorelai to comments on how ‘her first pancake turned out pretty good’

Right as Rory went back in, Lorelai looking at pics of Lane & Rory, Luke shows up. Mentions how much Rory has grown up, and so well. Lorelai brings up the boat. Luke apparently not only sold his boat, but bought a new boat. One that he and April can use, right away, to go out on trips with. Bigger, better, and already done.

"Wow Luke, I can’t believe you bought a boat. It used to take you a week to buy a shirt." – Lorelai

"Yeah, well, things change" – Luke

Zack is singing Mockingbird while the cake is wheeled out. The whole moment – either that or the conversation she had with Luke – means that Lorelai has to force her smile a bit.

  1. em says:

That episode finished just about a half hour ago for me. Wasn’t bad, pretty good scene at the end with Lorelai and Luke, though nothing happens relating to them getting together again. Looks like they got someone else to play LuLu! I didn’t even recognize her until Lorelai said her name. Logan was acting really weird. I’ll leave the rest until tomorrow so I don’t spoil it for the rest of you.

  2. angie says:

What a cute shower! Lane and Rory how sweet was that will you be my Lorelai Gilmore stuff. I am a little let down about L&L. I was expecting a little more. Why didn’t Luke ask about her dad? Just a lil something to let her know that he cares. Lorelai tried to get the ball rolling by making the T-shirt joke & he seemed to just shut her down. At least they are talking right? We’ll hope for more next week.

  3. MK says:

    hey…”things change”
straight out of the mouth of Luke Danes.
    so be patient!

  4. Michelle says:

I missed the first 15 minutes grrr.

  5. nina says:

there is still that look of admiration in luke’s eyes for rory and lorelai.

  6. *sarah* says:

    best so far.
happy, sad, complicated, and funny as hell.
they finally got it all in there! i didnt think it was gonna happen, but it seems to be gettin much better at this.

  7. RW says:

Luke seems to be doing real well with the whole Anna thing. Did you see his face when she mentioned that she was going to read to him her 5-page report on why Kirk is her hero? It sure wasn’t a pleasent look.

  8. Pamela says:

Well, seems Luke is now attempting to change – evidenced by selling the dad’s boat and even attending Lane’s shower on his own. I noticed the gun-shy attitude with both L&L on entering the festivities and Lorelei’s surprise to see Luke there. Seems to be going in the GG direction and I, personally, have been happy with all the latest episode.
Note to Em: I think it is still the same Lulu but with longer hair – take another look.

  9. carita says:

Did anyone notice that Amy Sherman-Palladino was listed as the “executive producer” or something like that (it was pretty fast)!! And Lauren Graham came right after with some other producer or director title.

    Was I dreaming?

  10. Taste like keys says:

Great episode! I loved that Rory finally had a real storyline. I missed the Lane/Rory and Lane/Lorelai interaction. Oh, and it looked like the same Lulu to me. Her hair was just longer. I thought it was funny how she was acting about Gil. :o)

  11. Pamela says:

P.S. Don’t you just love the way the weave in the Episode Titles from the dialogue – this last one was just excellent.

  12. Taste like keys says:

And how cute was the picture of little Rory and Lane??? Awwww!!!!

  13. JT says:

Unfortunately, I missed the episode. Due to our ice storm, CW-20 in West Branch, IA, is still not transmitting. Thankfully, I can watch One Tree Hill online.

  14. Jennifer!!!` says:

    beautiful episode

  15. em says:

That was who she was doing her report on? Awww, how did I miss that? Let’s just say a certain someone started screaming at that moment and I am not a lip reader so I missed it! That’s hilarious!

  16. Zuzzy says:

I liked it, although I was disappointed at the L/L confrontation, she was definately sending out vibes as if she wanted their relationship to be the way it used to be, not necessarily a relationship, but just best friends like before they got back together. And his “Things change” thing was a little distant, you can see the shut down look on Lorelei’s face.

PS, I loved the photo of lil Rory and Lane.

  17. riss says:

i was so glad there was going to be itneraction between l and l, but i wish that it was longer and they talked about their relationship, but according to the msot recent spoiler, that is coming april 17. can’t wait

i was very happy that lane and sokie were both int he episode. and babettte, miss patty, and lulu. basically we got everybody from stars hollow in it again. :)

i also was very pleased with the rory storyline. i am gla that there is finally something happening with rory and logan i love htem together, but it is boring for them just to be madly in love and have no fihgts or anything, so this episoe was good with that.

    great episode

  18. Lithium Dreams says:

    Thank you for posting this.
Seriously, because I’m assuming you take the time to write it yourself…and it’s more than i would do…

So yeah thanks for the recap…because my friend only taped the 2nd half of the show for me…

  19. rebecca says:

i really dont blame luke for being distant with lorelai because it is like u end it with me without really ending it with me, marry another guy, and now cuz its over u want me back? id be distant 2. its gonna take some time with them to be back on track because they have had a lot of drama. they have both been hurt and need to work through their issues. things cant change overnight even though do love eachother. it cant be like chris is gone lets be together again because it is not believable plus real life is not like that. there are gonna be short conversations, brushoffs and any other thing u can think of before they finally tlk. and plus i dnt think they are even gonna tlk next episode because the gilmore girls are going 2 north carolina and their rule was no guys…….except for the male stripper they ordered lol

but yea it was a good episode

  20. rachel says:

So, Logan is back to his old tricks! I wish Rory would take more of a stand with him.

  21. starcm10 says:

You weren’t dreaming – I saw this too. What does this mean?

  22. em says:

Just because Amy-Sherman Palladino left the show does not mean she did not create the show, so she still receives some credit. And Lauren Graham has been the producer since episode 7.12 “To Whom It May Concern”.

  23. a) I’m pretty sure it’s the same Lulu, Em.
    b) Luke/Lorelai moment- i started spazzing.
    c) Rory should have confronted Logan! He was such a jerk in that episode!

  24. starcm10 says:

Thanks. I guess I didn’t realize that AP was the current Executive Producer. I thought the show gave her credit when they show that the show was created by her.

  25. Wait but somehow the boat ends up in Lorelai’s garage… cause I saw spoiler pics on crazy-internet-people. Anyone know what episode Luke gets it back/it gets put in Lor’s garageS?

  26. Arieanna says:

It is, as always, my pleasure. I know lots of people don’t have access to see the show so I do my best to capture all its little nuances.

  27. mollie says:

okay i now that this is incredibly random but hom much did scott and lauren get payed for the hurndred times that they had to make out on the show.

  28. em says:

Mollie, of what I have heard, Lauren gets paid $50,000 an episode, but who knows if it’s true. I haven’t heard that much about Scott’s pay.

  29. mollie says:

but still when they kissed it looked sooo real (most of the time). I know for a fact they aren’t smmoching because my cousin is a movie producer and i have been on set and they charcacters aren’t smooching but they are in the movie.

they must get paid extra if they have to do a big smooch like in R&R or New and Improved Loreali. and even in their secerts speal.

  30. Roschelle says:

I liked this episode and the picture of Lane and Rory. But despite the fact that I love Logan, he was seriously a jerk in this episode. But then again, if they didn’t have this little fight thing, nothing would happen to the Rory storyline. SS LURK!! HAHA!

I was half expecting Luke to call Lorelai to ask if he could put his boat in her garage like season 5 but I guess that was just wishful thinking on my part.

  31. Rob says:

Ok this is a lame comment, but just wanted to say, the Lulu actress is still the same. She just lost some weight. Some crazy producer or manager of hers probably told her she wouldn’t get any work unless she lost weight. Dumb.

  32. Taste like keys says:

The stories DSR produces are still using characters and basic ideas shes created so in that sense, she is still EP :o)

  33. em says:

    Oh My God….

Something I just thought of while reading the TV Guide Blog on Gilmore (By the way, here’s the link. The author thinks that Lorelai and Rory are back to their whole selves, which I pretty much agree with http://community.tvguide.com/thread.jspa?threadID=800009950)

Anyway, so Lane basically asked Rory to be the godmother to her twins, and if you have seen the director’s cut for the next episode, you know that Luke will be asked to be the godfather, and Lorelai will most likely be at the baptism. So there possibly is a Luke and Lorelai chat in our future.

OH!!! Ok, Lane is giving birth in the next episode. Then, the baptism might be in the episode after the hiatus, and that is the episode where Lorelai tells Luke “I was possessed by an evil spirit when I slept with Chris.” Then, the episode after that is the one on April 17, where Lorelai takes a step toward her pre-Chris routine by stepping into Luke’s, sitting at the counter, and taking an order, and Ausiello calls that “a necessary first step to a full fledged Luke and Lorelai reunion. Hallelujah.” Hallelujah, indeed!

Anyway, so their chat in the episode before the one on April 17 must be BIG if she feels that she is able to step back into Luke’s and have a big coffee bowl of Luke’s coffee!

    HALLELUJAH!!!

  34. em says:

Ah, just starting on ABC Family, “Last Weeks Fights, This Week Tights.” The magic of the Luke and Lorelai relationship rises again. We should be seeing this magic again soon in season 7.

  35. balkce says:

I remember that in one of the trailers posted here about this particular episode showed Luke with his blue hat on, but I didn’t see him wearing it during the entire episode.

Did anybody noticed the same thing?

  36. MK says:

    duh.

  37. MK says:

    oh i know
    they all make sense now
well- they did before but now its extremely obvious!

  38. MK says:

    k i agree 100%

  39. MK says:

    I noticed, now im sad.

  40. MK says:

    no no.
kirk isnt HER hero – he is the hero of the story.
for all we know it could be cat-kirk-man…or something.

  41. sarahadoresjess says:

loved this episode! loved the shower… some true gilmore spirit!

  42. Manu_GG says:

    Oh my God!!
    Thanks em!!!
    Thankyou so much!!
I can’t wait to see the next episode!
Lorelai and Luke are getting closer and closer!!
…I can’t wait to see their reconciliation!!
    …I’m so excited now!!
    …I’m feeling like screaming!!
    ….This is great!!
    …Wonderful!!

  43. Obbsessed GG fan! says:

Ah Men! Sister! I Agree Whole Heartedly! They should let all there drama drift off beofer they start anything but with all this talk about them seeming they want to be friends is scaring me! I know it is not true but i just cant wait any longer for them to have a close interaction it has been WAY TO LONG! We are dying here Lauren! Lol

  44. HMH says:

I also missed this episode due to the ice storm in Iowa, I was quite upset. I google searched it and the episode is in 4 parts on YouTube. If you really want to see it, like I did, go to YouTube and search for Gilmore Girls 7.16. It’s listed under GG 7.16. Hope you can watch it!!!
