Episode Name: "I’m A Kayak, Hear Me Roar"
Episode Number: 7.15
Air Date: January 20, 2007
Lorelai goes to Rory’s apartment – knocks on the door. Paris says to come in, the door is open. The door is open? Since when? And at 6am! That’s very un-Paris. Anyway, Paris and Doyle are doing Yoga. They were doing it to prepare for the homeopathic aspect of med school interviews, but love it. Liza Weil is very flexible!
Lorelai takes Rory for a drive. It takes a while, but Lorelai says she and Chris broke up. So, she’s driving. Driving, and moving forward. They knew it wasn’t right, and pretending it was would hurt them both.
Rory is sorry but not surprised. She was excited about her parents being together, finally, but it never felt right. Lorelai apologizes. She wants Rory to know Chris, and GiGi, will still be in Rory’s life. Lorelai is really not looking forward to telling Emily. They run out of gas! I guess driving all night and not filling the tank can do that to you.
Lorelai also has no cell phone, and Rory left hers in their room. So, they are on a country road with no gas or cell phones. So, they must walk. Lorelai comments that it’s a beautiful day – but that it’s weird that it’s a beautiful day (with the way she feels).
Lorelai and Rory arrive at the Gilmore residence. New maid, again. A mumbly one. Emily is in the sitting room with her drink, but Richard is not in the sitting room yet. Emily asks about Chris, but Lorelai says he was ‘not able to make it’.
Emily is only serving mocktails - cocktails without alcohol. Setting a standard since Richard can’t have alcohol right now. Richard’s nurse comes down to say Richard will be down soon, he’s watching golf. The nurse is not happy to be playing maid. But gets Richard downstairs. He’s still in his PJs, which Emily comments on.
"If you’re going to treat me like a patient, I’m going to act like a patient. And patients wear robes" – Richard
Emily then tells the nurse to deliver messages to the cook and maid. Richard then gets upset with the nurse too since he’s hungry. Wants his food right away.
The maid comes with the food, although I have no idea what she said. They are having fish "again", which obviously annoys Richard. He comments on how bland everything is. Aside from the obvious forced dietary recommendations, he refuses to also talk about the diet all dinner.
Richard comments about the wedding party prepared for Chris and Lorelai, which he’s looking forward to – he gets something other than fish. Lorelai makes a face with the mention of Chris, which makes Emily suspicious.
Richard leaves the dinner table, early on in the meal, to go watch golf. And a repeat golf game at that. Emily does not feel she can say anything since she cannot agitate Richard. But she goes to bring him back.
Lorelai doesn’t want to tell her parents about Chris. Her mom, drinking a mocktail, and her father, after surgery. Not ideal.
Rory in a very cute outfit preparing breakfast in bed for Logan. It’s his birthday. He tries to go check his email first, but Rory tells him to go back to bed. He compromises by taking his laptop to bed.
The Huntzbergers don’t really celebrate birthdays, so he’s not used to the attention. And is used to a fancy dessert instead of a birthday cake.
Logan has not told his dad about the acquisition, and doesn’t yet want to. He’s proud, but also a little defiant.
‘Huntzberger, a young visionary entrepreneur’ – Wall Street Journal title
The nurse comes down to say that Richard is complaining about his light bulb. Apparently the maid is hiding from Richard, so the nurse cannot find him. Emily, meanwhile, is on the phone with Lorelai because she needs Lor to pick up Richard’s prescriptions. They no longer deliver.
Babette is gossiping to Miss Patty, saying ‘he’ definitely moved out. Referring to Chris as a beagle and Lorelai as a hen, which is incredibly confusing.
"The hen belongs with the rooster." Miss Patty
"Maybe." – Babette
But does the rooster know the hen is single again? Miss Patty thinks Lorelai and Luke should be together again, but Babette thinks maybe they shouldn’t. Kirk gets confused and thinks they are actually talking about a hen and an ostrich (Luke) mating. And, btw, Miss Patty lost weight again!
TJ and Liz stopped by to visit with the baby thinking that Luke is probably lonely now that April has moved to New Mexico. Luke says he’s fine. TJ brings in luggage. So, company is turning into a lie. They come clean. They have moths and need to fumigate.
Emily and Richard at the dinner table. Richard is playing with his soup – miso. He complains that neither soup nor salad are a meal, but rather a precursor or finale to a meal. Richard calls in the cook to complain, but his hands are tied by Emily’s input. He wants edible food – hot food – but Emily just won’t let him.
Lorelai drops off Richard’s prescriptions while he is comparing the food to airline food. The cook quits. He, a renowned chef, has too must self-respect to take it. Richard excuses himself from the room to go watch more golf. Emily is worried that Richard didn’t eat, but has no idea how to prepare food herself. Lorelai offers to at least make toast while they go on the hunt for the maid. Emily says Richard won’t call his office back. He will only watch golf. He won’t get up or do anything. She’s incredibly frustrated.
Sookie comes over with food for Richard. Lorelai is surprised it looks like ‘food’, but is still healthy.
Rory calls to ask Lorelai what her previous birthdays were, when she was little. She is sharing with him all birthday’s past - all that he missed as a kid since the Huntzberger’s had crappy birthdays.
Logan’s dad called to say happy birthday and wants to take them out to dinner. Rory had her big uber mega Gilmore party, but she is gracious enough to say it’s ok and they can go do the family thing with Mitchum, who she doesn’t really like. Lorelai and Rory wish each other a ‘Happy Logan’s birthday’ – cute
Liz, TJ and the baby have really taken over Luke’s apartment. Their stuff is just everywhere. Liz is making jewelry at the dining room table – apparently TJ is a stay at home dad now while Liz works. Liz makes a big deal of Luke going to visit Lorelai in the hospital. TJ doesn’t think Luke and Lorelai should get back together, but Liz thinks Luke should at least call Lorelai to see how Richard is.
Logan and a very sexy Rory meet with Mitchum at the restaurant. Mitchum is proud that Logan has been working hard, and even compliments Rory, which is a big thing. They have meaningless small talk before Mitchum asks if Rory is pursuing journalism still. He even calls her talented and good for the field. Wow, I want what he is on.
Lorelai hands off a series of chef names from Sookie to Emily to help out, who is in the midst of a panic trying to get some forms that Richard’s office needs to do the taxes. Lorelai steps in to help out, since she has a degree in business and knows how to do corporate taxes, which impresses Emily.
Emily pulls out some mickeys of vodka and scotch from the cupboard.
"Just because your father can’t drink, doesn’t mean the rest of us have to suffer" – Emily
After one swallow, Lorelai drops the "Chris and I broke up" bomb. Emily is speechless. Lorelai encourages her to continue to be speechless. And Emily gracefully changes the subject. Good on her.
Logan, Rory and Mitchum have finished their meal. Mitchum congratulates Logan on being a smart orderer. He seems so proud of Logan! While Logan answers his phone, Mitchum says how proud he is of Logan. Rory comments that he’s doing really well.
"He is, and it’s because of you" – Mitchum
He thanks Rory for everything she’s done for Logan. Getting him to go to London and focus. He thanks her profusely, despite Rory saying it was all Logan’s doing, and even cheers her for "being on the same page" and then saying they have more work to do.
Mitchum asks Rory what the next step should be, referring to Logan. That they are a team and need to decide what Logan should do next.
Mitchum then says they will "take care" of Rory too.
TJ and Liz are awake taking care of the baby, talking not so quietly about Lorelai and Luke and whether or not they should be together. Referring back to the whole ‘continuum’ conversation, while Liz has changed her mind and thinks he should be with Lorelai now.
Lorelai and Emily are still drinking together - and doing accounting. Going through the accounting software together. Lorelai says they need to give Richard a break, but Emily is worried about their future
"It’s like a canoe. Life." – Emily
Emily says now Richard has dropped the paddle. Just dropped it. So, the canoe is spinning in circles. Quite a drunk soliloquy.
"You are in a kayak, you know how to do all this." – Emily
Emily is one half of a canoe. Holds one oar. But Lorelai mans both ends of her oar – can control her destiny. Emily thinks her role is a dual one. That she knows how to be a wife and is really dependant. Emily actually is impressed with how independent Lorelai is - steering her own life.
"I am kayak, hear me roar" – Lorelai
"I mean, look at you. All these years, you’ve done well without a husband." – Emily
Then Emily talks about how it’s not a disaster getting a divorce for Lorelai. In her day, it made it hard to survive or remarry, unless he was older. Emily says Lorelai will be ok, and maybe even remarry some day. So, telling Emily actually provided comfort to Lorelai. Getting respect from Emily that she’s never had – always being looked down on for not being married, and now being looked upon for being independent.
Logan returns to the Gilmore party house, which is fully decked out. Rory, however, fesses about the weird conversation with Mitchum. How they needed to plan Logan’s future, conspiring, and how she is so not on the same page. Rory says she is so proud of Logan and everything he’s accomplished, all on his own. Rory was Huntzberger’d. Twirled all around agreeing to an opinion she did not hold.
While Rory goes to change Logan gets a call from one of his partners. They have received a cease and desist notice for the company they just bought. That someone else owned the patent and the company knew. They were just waiting for someone with deep pockets to step up before the other company sued them. Logan just lost his money – the entire value of the company was held up in that patent.
Logan does not tell Rory right away, but rather decides to enjoy the special birthday she has planned.
TJ and Liz are ready to get back to their home, which is just so sad for Luke. Not. He’s kinda glad to have them go. Left alone, Luke looks down at the phone.
Lorelai, with a mega hangover, comes downstairs for breakfast. She stayed over at the Gilmore home. Emily doesn’t have a hangover at all. What she does have is annoyance. Now she is snappy with Lorelai about the whole Chris thing, having to cancel the party, etc. Lorelai is hurt and decides to go home…

i didn’t get to see this episode…
so can someone…like…have the recaps in the video version by any chance??
please?? it would be a big help thanks!!
What was that “baby” song they were playing at Luke’s house that TJ said he loved?
Inquiring moms want to know!!!
All the happinesss that was accomplished by this episode was taken away in the last 5 minutes. This sucks.
Thank you! This recap combined with crazy-internet-people’s has painted what seems like a pretty accurate picture of what happened in my head!
Kelsey, I missed the episode, too. On this site, they usually post a video of the major points of the episode. If you want the full episode, they will have it on Youtube in a couple of days. It usually gets on Youtube around Thursday or Friday.
Who was that “rainman” maid? She was hilarious.
After tonight, I saw how they could bring L&L back together. Luke’s sister and TJ in their “jewelry touring van” have some bad accident and Luke has to take the baby while they recover. Naturally, he calls L when he has a problem and…. Right? Right?
The tender moment Lorelai and her mother shared in Richards office was surprising to say the least. In seven seasons that was only the second time Emily has shown Lorelai any affection or compassion. The last time occurred in Season 6, Episode 21, “Driving Miss Gilmore” in the Real Estate office. Emily placed her hand on Lorelai’s shoulder when Lorelai told her that her marriage to Luke wasn’t going to happen. I think that it made sense in terms of her character to snap back to the old Emily the next morning, but it did show a certain growth on Emily’s part. We, as fans, wouldn’t have believed it if Emily became all warm and fuzzy with Lorelai all of a sudden. Lorelai’s success in rearing Rory and in building a business is an unspoken source of pride for Emily and she is no fool. Chris’s behavior has not gone unnoticed. Lorelai and Emily will never be close but they are slowly finding a path toward some sort of peaceful resolution to their relationship problems.

So, guys…what did you think about the episode?!!
I wanna know!
…I’ll just watch it in the end of this week, cause i live in Brazil, and the downloads are only available in the end of the week!
So, tell me, tell me!!
It is obvious that Emily has to be either disabled (driving Miss Emily) or half in the bag (I am kyak…) to express pride and affection towards her daughter and it is probably the way she was raised. However, this episode was a laugh a minute starting with the diner discussion w/Miss Patty & Babette; the low talking maid; the “mocktail hour”; Luke’s sister/husband, etc. I LOVED IT & I WANT MORE!
i thought miss patty wanted lorelai with luke and not chris
In the Miss Patty – Babette conversation – Luke was the Rooster, Chris was the Beagle, Lorelai was the Hen.
They were saying that Hens belong with Roosters and not with Beagles.
I dont need to wait untill tomorrow :)
Thenk you!
Well, Mis Patty and Babette was right.
Totally love the episode! it was grate!
I really think its deaja vu – and it sucks.
I really enjoyed this episode, but did anyone notice that there was a sudden character change in multiple characters…Richard, Emily, Mitchum, The maids/doctor, even Paris a little with her yoga. Coincidence…lol.
Okay people, dont kill me for that ;-) but dont you feel a little bit sorry for Chris?? I have just seen the clips of season 7 on this page, because here in germany season 6 just finished…but I already thought after watching clip 7.14. “Poor Chris” I mean it is not that fair, that he is kicked in the ass like that eventhough I want L and Luke togehter :-)
I totally agree with Mis Patty. Lorelai belongs with Luke.
Emily was really good in this episode. She even showed some sympathy towards Lorelai, in her own Emily-like way. She did, however, return to her normal self in the morning.
And was it me or did this episode seem to have less commercials and more showtime then usual.
wrong the commercials were extra long and came more quickly in the show. I loved how emily helped lorelai and made her feel better about the situation. i also loved the part when tj and liz start talking about luke and lorelai and how they were at different places and everything and they thought luke was sleep. i especially loved the look he made when he heard them talking like he was really thinking about doing something about them now that chris is gone.
I think I was shocked by the way they ended last nights episode. For a moment we all got to see a glimpse of a Lorelei/Rory moment in Lorelai and Emily. It was heartwarming and I bought into it all.
When Emily turned back into the Queen Bitch at the end I wanted to haul off and hit her. To ruin those moments, alcohol related or not, took a great episode and soured it.
And knowing Emily’s character this long, I shouldn’t have been surprised but I was.
This episode was pretty good, but I still REALLY miss Amy Sherman Palladino’s hand at the helm! The episodes all seem so slow … even with Gilmore-experienced writers and directors working on the show (whose names were in the credits during seasons 1-6), they just aren’t matching the snappy pace that ASP set.
Also, why the *&%! aren’t the writers, directors and especially David Rosenthal familiar with the first 6 seasons of this show? For instance, in this episode when Rory is on the phone to Lorelai to help her remember the highlights from her past birthday parties (so she can re-create those moments for Logan), she asks Lorelai what they did for her 8th birthday party. Lorelai replies that it was a “teddy-bear tea party” or something when, as we all know from “Rory’s Birthday Parties” (Season 1, Episode 6) Rory’s 8th birthday party blowout was where the cops broke up the party and arrested the clown!!! Watch the DVDs Mr. Rosenthal! Real Gilmore Girls fans are watching!
And for God’s sake, pick up the pace! I find myself screaming “faster, faster” at the television set every Tuesday night. Amy, we miss you!
Reply to KK: I agree. Chris, for once, did handle the final split with Lorelei with dignity and grace after he stormed out. And, yes, one could feel sorry for anyone who feels second best. Chris jumped at an opportunity to get what he had wanted for a long time when Lorelei was most vulnerable and at least he recognized the mistake for what it was.
I liked this episode only because Chris is out of the picture.in a way i feel sorry for him but another part of me doesnt..i mean he had alot of time to get her to marry him and then all of a sucdden he comes into her life just after the brake up with Luke and trounces her with a marrige proposal in Paris… i mean Come on what woman would resist that expecially in paris!
I like that Rory and Logan are doing ok and that Rory made a special birthday for him to re-create his past birthday’s that was so cute!
I liked the part where Luke had just came home to see that Liz and TJ were leaving back to their house and he is there alone and pauses for a minute and looks at the phone… i could totalyy tell he wanted to call Lorelai and see whats going on!
I thought it was totally out of character for Micheam (SP) in the way they he was conspiring with her about Logan’s life and what was there next move and how he made a mistake about her journalistic appeal and how that night she stole the Yaght was a mistake…i was totally weireded out by that
I was kinda disapointed that there was hardly any Luke and Lorelai communication i thought there would be but i guess i have to wait longer..this is taking forever! come on writers hurry up wth the Love Stuff with Luke and Lorellai!!
And one more thing!
“You have been Hunzbergered! ” That is so a copy of ” You Have Been Gilmored!” I was like OMG! they totally stole that!
Yeah, I was disappointed that there weren’t more Luke and Lorelai moments, but I think it was because they didn’t want to make it look like he was pulling a “Chris” and just going out with her right after she broke up with another guy. That wouldn’t really be in his character I don’t think. I can’t wait for next week! Hopefully there will be more Luke and Lorelai interaction!
i thought the episode was amazing… i am dying for a l and l moment too, but i think lot of people would be upset is she jujst swung right back into luke’s arms.
i am surprised that no one has said much about the rory an mitchum interaction. i cannot stand mitchum because at the end of the fifth season rory ddin’t have it, but know, since rory and logan are getting serious, she is an amazing journalist who can work at any one of his papers. ugh….
i thought emily was great and i loved her sentimental moment with lorelai.
i got a little sick of richard’s attitue.
wendy- i llike you idea for the l an dl reunion.
Manu-GG, I am currently downloading the episode off of a link at crazy-internet-people. Here, just scroll down to 7.15:

OK!!
I quoted this so I’d be at the top.
I knew this would happen, ever since Liz said they were like the people in “The Lake House”
Here’s a tip…in that movie, they end up together b/c the guy WAITS for the girl.
[L/L FOREVER]

I just finished watching the episode I downloaded, and it was internesting. I especially liked the part with Luke, Liz, and T.J. Mostly, when Luke kept repeating that him and Lorelai were just friends. He said that seasons 1-4 and look how that turned out!
This was the first episode this season that I 100% felt like Amy Sherman-Palladino’s prescence wasn’t missed. Lauren Graham was dead on, Alexis wasn’t a second-rate character (it looks like she’ll FINALLY get a damn storyline again, albeit through Logan) and they made a decent use of the secondary characters.
Bravo at last!
Honestly, I thought that this episode was a little boring. Nothing huge happened but the previews for next episode look good!
I LOVE AN EPISODE SHOW YESTERDAY ITS GREAT STORY!!!I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO SEE NEW NEXT WEEK EPISODE!!!! I CANT WAIT !!!

I love the Girlmore Firls but it seems that it is just going in circles and is never going to come to an end… Lorelai needs to figure out what is going on with her life and who she wants to be with. I watch this show relgiusly still but it is becoming enough already. To much back and forth for me. If they are going to end this show this year then maybe that is a good thing because there isn’t anything new. Lorelai just needs to be with Luke and let that be because she has been the happiest with him so far in the show. I know this is just how the Gilmore Girls are but going in circles and on and on is just making me not care to watch anymore, even though I still do I am just not satisfied at the end. I own every episode and when I watch the past ones I am so much more into them. Maybe that is because the producer of the show has changed and I can totally see the differences in the show… but I don’t know… I love the show but at times I can’t stand it!
All of the episodes starting from Season 1 all the way to the most recent episode of Season 7 (I’m A Kayak, Hear Me Roar) are on http://www.gilmorefan.com
I know this is so old, but the part about the rooster beagle and hen, Miss patty thinks luke and lorelai belong together. babette thinks maybe not, maybe lorelai belongs with someone else ( not christojerk or luke
does anyone know what dress rory wore to the birthday dinner with logan and mitchum??
i looooved it!!!
thanx
what is the song that was playing while paris and doyle were doing yoga?
